Just the Type

One of the things that interests me most when analysing media is typography. The typeface we use to present a piece of text is crucial for how people will perceive it. As Media Students, we need to think carefully about how we are influenced by presentation of information... and typeface is the simplest and most effective place to start.

Title: Typography

Activity 1 -

In your own words, write definitions for the following words:

1. Typeface
2. Serif font (Give a definition and 5 examples of serif fonts)
3. Sans-serif font (Give a definition and 5 examples of sans-serif fonts.

Activity 2 -

On the pages I have linked to, you will find some information about where the two different types of font are used. Using this information, and choosing from the variety of fonts available on Microsoft Word, I want you to choose what typeface you would use for the following purposes...

(After each choice, explain why you have chosen this font)

1. A headline for a newspaper

2. A slogan on an advert for Nike trainers

3. A novel

4. The credits at the end of a movie

5. A advertisement for a night-club

6. The text for a football team's website

7. The speech in a comic book

Activity 3:

Look at the picture above.

Under the title 'NSPCC Advert - Use of Text', write a paragraph explaining how the advertisers have used typography in the advert. You must comment on:

1. Font-types (serif/ sans-serif)
2. Font colours
3. Font sizes
4. Positioning of the font on the poster
