In the world of advertising there is one thing that is even more important than design: placement. It doesn't matter how good a product is, or how well you may have designed a poster, it is completely useless unless it has been placed somewhere appropriate... where the right people will see it.

Over the years, people have found all sorts of ingenious places to place their adverts; on the sides of busses, by the side of football pitches, on billboards next to roads, and in films, just to name a small few. Can you think of any other places you might find an advertisement?
Today's focus is going to be on magazines.
Magazines are very useful to advertisers, because each magazine deliberately attracts a very specific audience. The magazine 'Gardener's World' for example, would attract a very different audience to 'Total Guitar'. This makes it very easy for advertisers to choose which magazines they wish to advertise in... if you were selling trowels for example, which magazine would you choose to advertise in?
Activity 1:
Using your own knowledge and the internet... Word document which gives a profile of 5 different magazines. For each of these magazines, list the following information:
Who is their main audience? (include age, gender, wealth and interests)
What products might you choose to advertise in this magazine? (at least 3 for each)
Extension Activity:
What magazines (use specific examples) would you choose to advertise the following products:
An iPod
A new Action-Adventure book
A Romantic Comedy film
Holidays in Egypt
A new flavour of lollipop
A new type of razor
A tour of a heavy-metal band
An NHS anti-smoking campaign
A new low-fat soft-drink
A new type of exercise machine
Extension Activity II:

For each of the above products, name one other place where they might be advertised.
