There are two golden questions that every advertiser will have to ask of themselves. Without these questions, adverts do not have a hope of being successful. The questions are:
1. Who is my audience?
2. What am I doing to persuade them to use my product?
Remember these questions, they are going to be at the heart of everything you design during your time as a Media Studies student.
Activity One:
Complete the following process for each of the posters above:
1. Paste into MS Word
2. Using what you can see on the poster and what you may already know about the product, briefly describe what the audience for that product is (refer to age, gender, wealth and anything else you might know about the audience)
3. Pick out any details from the advert you can find that show how the designers have managed to appeal to their audience (you may refer to colour, images used, slogan, camera angles, layout or any other aspects which you think are interesting).
Activity Two:
In some respects, it does not matter what the product you are advertising is... if you know the tricks to reaching a specific audience then you can sell anything to anyone.
1. I want you to pick one of the following products: a torch, a pizza, a printer, a pen or a clothes shop.
2. When you have chosen your product, I want you to briefly describe an advert you would design to market this product to the following audiences:
a) Old women
b) Teenage boys
c) Middle-aged office-workers
d) Teachers
e) Young children (age 5-8)
3. For each of these advert descriptions, say where you would place your advert (what magazine, website, billboard, etc.) and why.
